Historical Context
• Micah the prophet was from Judah and ministered between ~740 through 700 BC during the reign of three different kings (Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah)
Roughly ~150 years of division: Northern/Israel Kingdom (politically unstable and spiritually corrupt) vs. Southern/Judah Kingdom (more stable/faithful but increasingly compromised)
• Both Kingdoms were threatened by the rapid rise of Assyria to the north east, and eventually they fell in 722 BC, as prophesied by Micah
Major Sins Condemned: Worshipping false gods, unfaithfulness to their covenant; hearts given to greed; corrupt leaders who failed in justice; oppression and exploitation of the poor; voices of false prophecy; acts of violence; dishonest economic practices; broken trust and deceit within the community; and a reliance on human strength rather than the Lord
• Walking with God requires spending time with Him, engaging in conversation, matching His pace, and following His leadership
• Waiting until we are exhausted, caught, or “satisfied” with our pursuit of darkness is cute when you’re a little dog, it’s rebellious as humans
• Choosing to humble yourself is far better than being humbled by God
