We’re all created by God…loved by God…valued because we bear His image…but we’re not all automatically God’s children.
“We’re all God’s children.”
Spiritual-sounding Cultural Cliches:
· “God helps those who help themselves” (Self-reliance)
· “Follow your heart” (Self-authority)
· “God just wants me to be happy” (Self-satisfaction)
· “I love Jesus but not the Church” (Self-sufficiency)
· “Everything happens for a reason” (Self-comfort)
· “We’re all God’s children.” (Self-identity)
John 1:10
John 1:11
No one becomes God’s child by default.
John 1:12

The pathway to becoming a child of God:
· Receive Jesus (Grace initiates)
· Believe in His name (Faith responds)
· New birth (New life follows)
God has been moving toward you so that you can finally move toward Him.
Imago Dei = the image of God
Genesis 1:27
Creation gives you birth. Christ gives you new birth.
John 3:1-2
John 3:3
John 3:4
Where Jesus calls for rebirth, we often settle for self-improvement.
Where Jesus says die to yourself, we often settle for a slightly better version of you.
Where Jesus calls for transformation, we often settle for behavior modification.
John 3:5-8
John 7:50-51
Jesus is patient with people who move towards Him, even if it comes inch by inch.
John 19:38-42
Stop believing in the Jesus you imagined. Follow who Jesus is.
· The Jesus who doesn’t just inspire you.
· The Jesus who doesn’t just encourage you.
· The Jesus who doesn’t just go along with all of your choices.
· The real Jesus – the One who died to make you new.
What this series has been trying to do:
· Clarify identity
· Call you to respond to grace
Baptism is a picture of this new identity.
Galatians 3:26-27
“Abba (Daddy), Father.” – Galatians 4:6
You need to know Jesus, walk with Jesus, and be shaped by Jesus.
“Father, make this real in me. Make me your child. Make me new.”
“Lord, I’ve been living off the Jesus I imagined. Bring me back to who Jesus really is.”
“God, awaken my heart again. Stir up what has grown cold. Breathe Your Spirit afresh into me.”
“Lord, make my next step clear and where it is, give me courage to take it – into baptism, into community, into discipleship, into Scripture, into obedience.”
