Objection #1: There is No Advantage to Being God’s People

When Paul says “Jew” he has in mind both the racial aspect (descendant of Jacob) and the religious aspect

Paul has just said that spiritually a “true” Jew is not about the race or the religious law, but the heart of obeying God 2:28-29

Paul anticipates that what he has said will be twisted into the idea that the Jews according to the flesh do not have a special place in the work of God

Paul answers that those who are Jews according to the flesh do have a special place in God’s plan

Today’s takeaway: There is great advantage in being the people of God and following the Lord with your whole heart

Objection #2: God’s Promises are Not Secure

If the Jewish people have a special place, how do they still face wrath? Doesn’t that nullify God’s promises to them?

There is a difference between the nation of Israel and individual Jews

God is true to His promises even when He judges sin

Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge.
Psalm 51:4

Today’s takeaway: The unbelief of many of today’s Jews does not nullify God’s promises to Israel as His people

I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin
Romans 11:1

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Romans 11:29

Objection #3: God is Not Just in All His Actions

If God’s holiness is magnified because of my sin (it makes Him look greater) how is He just in inflicting wrath for what ultimately benefits Him?

This objection becomes a justification for sin – the end justifies the means

The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more
Romans 5:20

God is all together righteous and just in all His deeds

Today’s takeaway: How we live after we become a child of God is important, we are not to continue in sin

Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin
Romans 6:6
