Money Matters
James 5:1-6

James 5:1-6

Manner In Which Wealth Was Acquired
1. Withheld Wages (vs. 4)
We find that when God gave Moses the Law, there were certain principles that were to be present in an employer/employee relationship. (see Deut. 24:14-15)
2. Judicial Manipulation (vs. 6)
The phrase “put to death” (vs. 6) should probably be understood in a figurative way.
How Wealth Was Used (vss. 3 & 5)
1. It Was Stored—...It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! (James 5:3c)
Jesus warned against such a practice when He said Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth...but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven. (Matt. 6: 19-20)
2. It Was Squandered—You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. (James 5:5)
Squandering is portrayed in three aspects in this verse.
1. Luxurious Living
Jesus said, Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions. (Luke 12:15)
Jesus said, Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions. (Luke 12:15)
2. Wanton Pleasure—Wanton pleasure is unrestrained, loose, without regard to what is right and wrong.
• It’s hedonism at its best.
• It’s hedonism at its best.
3. Fattened Hearts
Result of Wealth Mismanagement (vss. 1-3)
1. Character Erosion
2. Riches Will Pass
Notice what Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-20.
3. Misery
The Greek word for misery appears only two times in the New Testament: here and in Romans 3:16. It has to do with the idea of facing overwhelming hardship or trouble.
• It has to do with suffering or distress.
• It has to do with suffering or distress.
The overall point of these six verses is this. Be cautious when you deal with wealth.
What the Apostle Paul told Timothy regarding wealth:
Instead of storing up earthy treasures, store up treasures in heaven, Jesus said.
• Heavenly treasures have spiritual significance. They include righteous living—pursuing holiness—extending mercy and kindness to others, and so on. It includes, according to this verse, doing good works (works or deeds that bring honor and glory to God).
• Heavenly treasures have spiritual significance. They include righteous living—pursuing holiness—extending mercy and kindness to others, and so on. It includes, according to this verse, doing good works (works or deeds that bring honor and glory to God).
Paul also said to be generous and willing to share.
APPLICATION
Be cautious how you view and deal with money.
Don’t place your hope and trust in it.
Place your hope and trust in God.
Use what He has blessed you with for His honor and glory.

Happy Anniversary!

We thank you for your faithfulness, especially during such challenging times, and look forward to seeing how God will use our building in the year ahead as we continue to “Know Him and Make Him Known.” If you would still like to make a contribution to this fund, please drop your gift in the regular offering with the notation of “Oktoberfest.”

Hearing Assistance Devices Available
We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.
Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
