Text: Philippians 4:6
“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”
- Martin Luther
Philippians 4:6, …Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Numbers 20:10-12, Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”
I Corinthians 10:4, For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Deuteronomy 3:23-27, “And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? 25 Please let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’ 26 But the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.’”
Big Idea: True prayer is not about manipulating God through repetition or formula, but about relating to Him in humble dependence and trust.

Big Idea: True prayer is not about manipulating God through repetition or formula, but about relating to Him in humble dependence and trust.
1) Prayer is relational, not transactional.
Romans 4:4,5, When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. 5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.
False view of prayer = slot machine God.
Right view of prayer = Don’t come to leverage God’s hand; come to learn His heart.
Philippians 4:19, …My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

2) Prayer is honest, not manipulative.
Matthew 6:7, And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Matthew 6:8, Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
False view of prayer = Genie in a bottle.
Right view of prayer = God’s not looking for perfect words; He’s listening for a humble heart.
Matthew 6:7, And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Matthew 6:8, Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Right view of prayer = God’s not looking for perfect words; He’s listening for a humble heart.
3) Prayer is Spirit-led, not self-driven.
James 4:2,3, You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
False view of prayer = prosperity Gospel.
Romans 8:26,27, We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
Right view of prayer = Prayer is not about our willpower, but about the Spirit’s presence.
