Thirty Words, Part 4: Set Up God’s Kingdom

We all feel the pull to have it our way—with our families, our schedules, our futures. But if we’re honest, even our best attempts at self-rule often leave us tired, anxious, or frustrated. Deep down, most of us long for a bigger story, a wiser way to live, and a community that helps us flourish rather than compete. In Part 4 of our Thirty Words series, we’re exploring Jesus’ most frequent topic—the Kingdom of God—and what it means for everyday people right now. The “kingdom” Jesus talked about isn’t castles and crowns but a living reality you can step into today—a new way of life where God’s wisdom, love, and justice take root in real time and begin reshaping your world from the inside out.

The Gospel in Thirty Words
Jesus is GOD WITH US,
come to SHOW US God’s love,
SAVE US from sin,
SET UP God’s kingdom,
and SHUT DOWN religion,
so we canSHARE IN God’s life.
So what?
Jesus did not leave us with a particularly clear, dictionary-style definition of the kingdom.
Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom is indirect, subtle, even subversive.
According to Jesus, the kingdom is a transcendent reality.
• The kingdom is arriving on earth.
• The kingdom is of incredible value.
• The kingdom is not the kind we expect.
• The kingdom is already among us.
In broad strokes… the “kingdom of God” means the dynamic rule or reign of God. The reign involves God’s intentions, authority, and ruling power. It doesn’t refer to a territory or a particular place. Nor is it static. It’s dynamic—always becoming, spreading, and growing. The kingdom points us not to the place of God but to God’s ruling activities. It is not a kingdom in heaven, but from heaven—one that thrives here and now. The kingdom appears whenever women and men submit their lives to God’s will.
Donald Kraybill
The Kingdom is where what God wants done is done.
Dallas Willard
The good news is an invitation to become citizens of God’s kingdom.
Dallas Willard
The kingdom of God is a collectivity—a network of persons who have yielded their hearts and relationships to the reign of God.
