Submit & Resist
James 4:7
Pastor Jerry Koller
There are two commands in this verse. The first is to Submit, therefore, to God (James 4:7a).
• The word “submit” is primarily a military term which literally means to fall in rank or to line up under.
• Submission is a voluntary act.
• Submission is a voluntary act of love.
Without submission, there can be no humility.
The flip side of the coin: Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7b)
• The word resist is the translation of a word which literally means to stand against, or to oppose.
• It has to do with the idea of standing firm against an onslaught.
Resisting is a voluntary act.
• It is an important choice:
How To Resist the Devil:
The word “resist” here is the same word we find in James 4:7. Again, the word “resist” can also be understood as a military term.
Military Imagery of Roman Soldiers:
The Belt of Truth: Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, (Eph. 14a NIV)
• Also called the Girdle of Truth.
• This is a call to preparedness.
Breastplate of Righteousness: and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, (Eph. 14b)
• The breastplate wrapped around a soldier’s entire torso covering both the front and the back.
• The purpose of the breastplate was to protect vital organs like the heart, lungs, intestines, and so on.
• The only way to put on the breastplate is to surrender our lives to Christ by putting our faith and trust in Him for salvation.
Good News Shoes - and having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace. (Eph. 6:15)
• The word “shod” means to bind under one’s feet.
...with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.
• The word “preparation” has to do with readiness.
• It has to do with firm footing.
• This firm footing is a result of the Gospel of peace.
Shield of Faith - In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith…(Eph. 6:16a)
• It is this shield that Paul is probably referring to, for the shield mentioned in verse 16 is one in which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Eph. 6:16b)
• Faith is our spiritual shield.
Helmet of Salvation - And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Eph. 6:17)
Sword of the Spirit - Both of these pieces of armor—the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit are both references to the words of God.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
