Pride & Humility
James 4:6
Pastor Jerry Koller
The name Lucifer is derived from a Latin translation of a Hebrew word, son of the morning or morning star, that appears in Isaiah 14:12.
Church scholars typically agree God revealed Satan’s fall to the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel.
Ezek. 28:12b -God states that at one time, Satan was blameless. He had the seal of perfection—the authentication of his blamelessness.
He was full of wisdom. He was perfect in beauty, a description that is found in verse 13.
Verses 14 & 15 - Talk about credentials. The model of perfection. Full of wisdom. Perfect in beauty. God gave him tremendous responsibility.
What wickedness was found in him? The first half of verse 17 says: Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty;
Satan started thinking he was something special.
Notice that God said he...Satan...corrupted his wisdom. God didn’t do it. It was Satan’s doing. Pride corrupts.
Reflect God’s judgment
In Isaiah 14:12, we see the initial punishment of Satan’s sin.In the next two verses, his sin is revealed.
5 “I Will” statements that reveal the sin of pride
(I will) Ascend to heaven
(I will) Raise my throne
(I will) Sit on the mount of assembly
(I will) Ascend above the heights of the clouds
(I will) Make myself like the Most High
How does that affect you and I? Pride can easily develop, which is why James addresses it.
• The Apostle Peter said the exact same thing:
The solution, or safeguard, against developing inappropriate pride is this:
Develop humility.
• Humility is an attitude or mindset that is void of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
This definition comes from Philippians 2:3 which says:
Selfish ambition seeks to promote self and personal ideas, desires or standards. Self becomes the measure of all things.
• The term empty conceit comes from a word which means boasting, pride and vanity.
Humility is an attitude or mindset that is void of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
“What does humility look like?”
“More important” includes the idea of rising above or to be above as far as significance is concerned.
• It has to do with being above or superior in rank, authority or power.
• It has to do with being supreme.
“How can we develop it?”
APPLICATION
Ask yourself: Do I have a realistic and accurate view of my place before God and my fellow man, or do I tend to have a greater view of myself than I should?
Scripture to help you Evaluate:
• Remember that all of mankind has been created in the image of God—not just you.
All mankind created in the image of God, all mankind is fearfully and wonderfully made—not just you.
We can’t have a realistic and accurate view of ourselves before God and our fellow man without considering the Great Commandment.
Following the example set by Jesus.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
