Because our hearts are oriented primarily by desire, by what we love, and because these desires are shaped and molded by the habit-forming practices in which we participate . . . Rituals and practices of the mall . . . shape our imaginations and how we orient ourselves to the world . . . . The visions of the good life embedded in these practices become surreptitiously embedded in us through our participation in the ritual and rhythms of these institutions. ~ K.A. Smith, Desiring the Kingdom
What idols have a hold on my heart?
– We are most susceptible to idols where we are least confident in God
– We look to idols to give us what only God can give.
What is idolatry? Well, an idol can be defined most simply in this way: an idol is anything in our lives that occupies the place that should be occupied by God alone. Anything that holds my life and my devotion, anything that is central in my life, anything that seems to be vital, anything that is essential to me; an idol is anything by which I live and on which I depend. Anything that moves and rouses and attracts and stimulates me is an idol. An idol is anything that I worship, anything to which I give much of my time and attention, my energy and my money; anything that holds a controlling position in my life is an idol. ~ D. Martin Lloyd Jones
If you love anything more than God, if you rest your security in anything more than the providence and wisdom and sovereignty of God, if your imagination is captured by anything more than the greatness of God, if your value is rooted in anything more than the grace and love of God, if you love anything more than God, and you do, you are looking to a created thing to give you what only God can possibly give you. Therefore, you have set up an idol. ~ Tim Keller, Counterfeit Gods
– We use idols to seize control of God, but they quickly seize control of us.
An idolatrous attachment can lead you to break any promise, rationalize any indiscretion, or betray any other allegiance, in order to hold onto it. It may drive you to violate all good and proper boundaries. To practice idolatry is to be a slave. ~ Tim Keller, Counterfeit Gods
Steps to Freedom
1. Lean on God’s promises.
2. Take responsibility for your sin.
3. Pursue accountability from others.
4. Seek the face of Jesus.
