Kingdom: The Ascent Pt 5 - How to Handle Lust

Kingdom: The Ascent Pt 5 - How to Handle Lust

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus lays out a bold vision for life in the Kingdom of God—one that doesn’t just tweak our behavior, but transforms our hearts. From salt and light to loving enemies, from anger to integrity, we're called to higher ground. This summer, we’ll climb verse by verse through these challenging teachings, discovering how to live with purpose, purity, and passion in a world that desperately needs the hope of Jesus. It’s not an easy ascent, but the view is worth it.

New people don’t serve old masters.
Anger shouts, “You’re the problem!” Lust whispers, “You’re a product.”
1. The Original Command – “You have heard it said…”
2. The Heart of the Command – “But I tell you…”
3. The Transforming Initiative – “So take drastic action…”
Culture normalizes lust—like it’s no big deal.
The church often treats lust like it’s the unpardonable struggle.
Secrecy gives sin power. What we won’t talk about, we won’t get healed from.
Don’t let secrecy empower your shame. Because what you hide, you hand over to the enemy, But what you bring into the light, Jesus begins to heal.
1. Sex is a beautiful gift from God. - God invented it. God designed it.
Lust turns sex into a commodity and people into products.
2. Jesus isn’t talking about the appreciation of beauty. - It is not a sin to find someone attractive.
Lust is not about seeing someone, it’s about choosing to "use" someone in your mind.
3. Jesus is not condemning the momentary flash of sexual temptation. - Temptation is not the same as sin.
Stop letting shame narrate your growth.
You may not be able to stop temptation from showing up, but you can avoid putting yourself in its path.
“You can't stop a bird from flying overhead, but you can stop it from making a nest in your hair or biting off your nose.” - Martin Luther
“If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.”
You can’t treat serious sin with casual effort.
1. Feed Your Spirit: You can’t starve your soul and expect to walk in strength.
• Scripture isn’t just protection, it’s transformation.
• Prayer, worship, and accountability are how you stay filled.
• When you’re full of truth, you’re not as hungry for lies.
• Stay close to God’s people and you’ll stop reaching for poison when you’re alone.
2. Rethink Your Patterns: Lust thrives in lazy habits.
• Stop expecting a pure mind while bingeing impure content.
• Rethink the shows, the songs, the scroll.
• Rethink your relationships, who pulls you closer to Christ? Who doesn’t?
• Rethink your tech, do your apps, your phone, your tech help you grow or keep you stuck?
3. Discipline Your Body: Your body isn’t the problem. But it needs to be trained, not indulged.
• Exercise. Move more. Run, lift, stretch, sweat.
• Fast. Fasting isn’t punishment, it’s practice. Skip a meal to train your appetite to listen to your spirit.
• Every time you say no to your flesh, you’re reminding your soul who’s in charge.
4. Don’t Let Shame Have the Final Word: Shame says, “You’re too far gone.” Grace says, “You’re still being shaped.”
• Shame isolates. Grace invites.
• Lust grows in secret, but freedom grows in community.
• Bring it into the light, and watch how healing begins.
The power to resist doesn’t come from guilt, it comes from grace.
You’re not fighting to be loved. You’re loved, so now you can fight.
He took your shame, so you could walk in freedom.
Stop letting your shame shout louder than His sacrifice.
hey
