Big Idea: God demonstrates love and loyalty to His people; we need friends who will show us the same.
I. David’s Mighty Men (vv. 8-39)
A. David’s leadership and the loyalty he inspires is on full display
here. This account of when David was on the run from Saul,
teaches us the importance of sacrificial leadership, and of the
power of loyalty and love in friendship.

glory (cf. Phil. 4:14-20).

II. Our Mighty Friends (vv. 16-17; cf. Phil. 1:3-8)
A. We all need to be, and to have, mighty friends in this life. Even
Paul the Apostle recognized his need for mutual encouragement
and support in the proclamation of the Gospel (cf. Phil. 1:3-8).

B. Our mighty friends remind us:
1. Our need for each other – The church works best when it

2. Our loyalty to one another reflects Jesus’ loyalty toward us.
3. Loyalty and encouragement is a two-way street (vv. 16-17).
(Heb. 13:5b). When we, too, reflect this commitment and
loyalty to God and to one another as leaders and friends, then
our light will shine bright for Christ in the world.
