In a world filled with oppression, toil, and envy, God calls us to live with a posture of contentment and peace through Him.
THE REALITY OF OPPRESSION. (vv. 1-3)
Our faith leads us to seek justice and comfort through the gospel and practical help.
Rather than being controlled by injustice and suffering, the psalmist found a level place of refuge through the act of worship. (Psalm 73:2-3, 16-17)
Our own perspective is hazy at best.
Because God’s perspective is based on His love, grace, and eternal purposes, the moment we account for these, we make wise judgments about life under the sun.
THE BURDEN OF TOIL AND ENVY. (vv. 4-6)
Many work hard not out of purpose but from competition and comparison. (Job 5:2; Proverbs 14:30; 24:19; Job 5:2)
The green monster of envy can drive us to destruction.
THE WISDOM OF CONTENTMENT. (v. 6)
Less with peace is better than more with anxiety.
God is not telling us to be lazy but to be intentional.
Avoid living for what others think and rest in the Lord’s provision. (Proverbs 15:16; 16:8)
“Lord, help me to be content in the pleasant valley between too much and too little; between slavery and sloth; between over-competing and underperforming. Help me to remember that I have been blessed and to walk with one hand in Yours so I am not obsessed with life under the sun.”
