Big Idea: Praise and worship springs from a delight in the Lord.
I. Focused on God’s Attributes (vv. 1-25)
A. David wrote this song (also seen in Psalm 18) after ascending to
the throne (but before his sin with Bathsheba). It is a fitting way
to reflect on David’s reign as Israel’s king. Though David was a
man after God’s own heart, his rule was marked by much
conflict and bloodshed. Yet, through it all, God was faithful and
sustained David even in his darkest days.
B. David’s praise sprang:
1. From experiencing God’s saving power (vv. 7, 13-20; cf. 2
Tim. 4:16-18) – God strengthened David in his most
difficult and challenging moments.
2. From knowing God’s character (vv. 2-4; cf. Eph. 3:20-21) –
David knew and trusted in God’s attributes of love, grace,
mercy, holiness, justice, omniscience, and omnipotence.
C. When we recognize God’s goodness, His power, and His
majesty, and when we experience His amazing grace and mercy,
then praise is a proper and natural response that fuels our hunger
for a deeper and more intimate relationship with Him.
II. Focused on our Attitude (vv. 26-51)
A. David’s song in this chapter is a contemplation of God’s
faithfulness to him as he was on the run from Saul. Not only do
we see here God’s goodness toward David, but also David’s
attitude and approach to the challenges he faced.
B. We see in David’s attitude:
1. A trust in God’s righteousness (vv. 21-25).
2. A trust in God’s faithfulness (vv. 26-31).
3. A yearning for God’s presence (vv. 50-51; cf. Ps. 63:1-4).
C. How do we approach worship? As a duty or delight? Our
attitude makes a big difference when faced with the challenges
of life. When our delight is in the Lord, then we can see His
hand at work even in the most trying of times.
