Discussion Notes (for use in a small group or individual study)
Sermon: Motherhood, Mission, and Mighty Prayer
Questions:
1. Opening question: What’s one thing your mother (or another influential woman in your life) did that you are especially grateful for?
2. The sermon looked to Hannah in 1 Samuel as an example of godly motherhood and prayer. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you?
3. Review 1 Samuel 1:1–2:2, asking God to show you important truths in the story.
4. Read Luke 18:15–17
a) What stands out to you about Hannah’s view of children and motherhood in this story?
b) Why do you think Jesus highlighted the faith of children as an example for us to follow? (Luke 18:15–17)
c) How can we honor or support the calling of motherhood in our church family today? (Isaiah 54:1-2)
5. Read Psalm 127:3–5
a) According to Psalm 127, why are children described as a "heritage" and a "reward"?
b) How can seeing parenting as spiritual work change the way parents approach their role?
c) If you’re not currently raising children, what other “spiritual descendants” might God want you to invest in? (Isaiah 54:1-2)
6. Read Romans 8:24–25
a) What do you notice about Hannah’s faith and patience in waiting for God’s answer to her prayer?
b) How does Romans 8:24–25 encourage us when we have to wait for God to work in our lives?
c) What are you currently trusting God for, even though the outcome is still unseen?
7. Read Luke 22:44
a) How does Hannah’s desperate prayer (1 Samuel 1:10-16) reflect the kind of prayer Jesus modeled in Luke 22:44?
b) Why is it important to surrender our desires to God’s will when we pray?
c) What helps you stay faithful in prayer when God seems silent or the answer is delayed?
8. Who in your life needs encouragement today to trust God with their calling, family, or prayers? How might you encourage or pray with them this week?
9. Spend time in prayer thanking God for the gift of spiritual influence—whether in parenting, mentoring, or encouraging others. Ask God to help you trust Him more deeply, pray more earnestly, and live with purpose like Hannah.
