SERMON NOTES
Psalm 19:1-4
Top Reasons People Give for Not Believing in God:
· The problem of evil and suffering
· Religious hypocrisy and abuse
· Lack of Evidence
· Religious pluralism
· A need for independence
· Intellectual doubt or philosophical objections
· Apathy or indifference
If the question, “is God real?”, is answered with a “yes,” then it changes everything.
Mark 9:24
If God isn’t real, then nothing else in faith holds up.
· What is prayer?
· What is the Bible?
· How do we know right from wrong?
· Isn’t hope just a wish?
· Isn’t worship an empty ritual?
If He is…
· …then we’re not alone
· …there is such a thing as truth.
· …life has purpose.
· …what is right and good is rooted in His character and nature.
Hebrews 11:1
Follow the evidence – not just intellectually, but spiritually and personally.
Ecclesiastes 3:11
Psalm 19:1
Classic Philosophical Argument for God: the Cosmological Argument (simplified)
· Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
· The universe began to exist.
· Therefore, the universe has a cause.
· That cause must be outside the universe – eternal, powerful, and uncaused.
· We call that cause God.
Classic Philosophical Argument for God: the Teleological/Fine-Tuning Argument (simplified)
· The universe shows incredible design – complexity, order, and purpose.
· Therefore, the best explanation is that it was designed by an Intelligent Creator/Designer.
· We call this Intelligent Creator/Designer God.
Romans 2:14-15
Classic Philosophical Argument for God: the Moral Argument (simplified)
· If objective moral values exist, there must be a moral lawgiver.
· Right and wrong aren’t just opinions – they’re real.
· Therefore, the best explanation is that morality comes from a set standard governing all people.
· This standard was put in place by a God who is truly good.
The other voice that speaks loudly (about the existence of God) is the longing inside us, the sense that there has to be more to this life.
“God will always reveal Himself to anyone who is seeking Him and that has been my experience in China.” – Anonymous missionary to China
Why doesn’t God make Himself even more obvious?
Romans 1:20
Why doesn’t God make Himself even more obvious?
For some, the real issue isn’t that we can’t find Him. It’s that we don’t really want to—because if we did, it would mean giving up control.
Psalm 139:11-12
God speaks and invites us in:
· Through the stars and the sky.
· Through the whispers of our conscience.
· Through the echoes in our longing and restlessness.
· Ultimately, He has spoken through Jesus.
The answer to the question, “is God real?”, through Scripture, through reason, through experience, through the universe around us, is a resounding yes!
