This Is Us - Part 1
May 4, 2025
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, New Living Translation)
“Don’t… forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, ‘Life is not pleasant anymore.’”
(Ecclesiastes 12:1, NLT)
“I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!” When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.”
(1 Samuel 17:10–11, NLT)
How can we honor God in our youth?
1. Be faithful and obedient.
“David was the youngest son. David’s three oldest brothers stayed with Saul’s army, but David went back and forth so he could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem.”
(1 Samuel 17:14–15, NLT)
- Start serving where you are!
But when David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry. “What are you doing around here anyway?” he demanded. “What about those few sheep you’re supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and deceit. You just want to see the battle!”
(1 Samuel 17:28, NLT)
Adults: Don’t discourage the younger generation!
2. Be proactive and persistent.
“The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”
(1 Samuel 17:37, NLT)
- When you see a need, do something about it!
Adults: Don’t demand that youth do things the way you do!
“I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.”
(1 Samuel 17:39–40, NLT)
3. Be courageous!
Take a step out in faith—and watch God show up!
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.…This is the LORD’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
(1 Samuel 17:45, 47, NLT)
“From that day on Saul kept David with him and wouldn’t let him return home. . . . Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully.”
(1 Samuel 18:2, 5, NLT)
Adults: Invest your time, money, and energy in the next generation of leaders.
