Title: Who We’re Becoming
Reference: 2 Peter 1:1-11
Speaker: Bill Gorman, BillG@cckc.church
– Jesus is the picture of the good person.
What the New Testament writers are urging, following Jesus himself, is therefore quite like Aristotle's argument in some ways, but in a significantly different mode. The comparison is somewhat like that between a three-dimensional model sitting beside a two-dimensional one—a cube beside a square, say, or a sphere beside a circle: Jesus and his followers are offering the three-dimensional model toward which Aristotle's two-dimensional one points. When you get the sphere, you get the circle thrown in, as it were, but it now means something rather different. ~ N.T. Wright, After You Believe: Why Christian Character Matters
The Sermon on the Mount “is offering Jesus's answer to the great question of human flourishing, the topic at the core of both the Jewish wisdom literature and that of the Greco-Roman virtue perspective, while presenting Jesus as the true Philosopher-King. ~ Jonathan Pennington, The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing
And when people cease to believe that there is good and evilOnly beauty will call to them and save themSo that they will still know how to say: this is true and that is false. ~ Czeslaw Milosz, One More Day
The people who hanged Christ never, to do them justice, accused him of being a bore - on the contrary, they thought him too dynamic to be safe. It has been left for later generations to muffle up that shattering personality and surround him with an atmosphere of tedium.
We have efficiently pared the claws of the Lion of Judah, certified him "meek and mild" and recommended him as a fitting household pet for pale curates and pious old ladies. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers, Letters to a Diminished Church: Passionate Arguments for the Relevance of Christian Doctrine
– Jesus has given us the power to become a good person
No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. ~ C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
– Are you following Jesus in anticipation or chasing something else in frustration?
The Great Stone Face ~ Nathaniel Hawthorn
