I John 2:13 “I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.”
“Society demands conformity. If you fall beneath its standards, it will punish you; If you rise above its standards, it will persecute you…But the Christian is a departure upward…he ‘hears a distant Drummer.’…he gets rid of it by surrendering the herd to God. Just as a man can be a self-centered man, so he can be a herd-centered man.” (Growing Spiritually, Jones, 18)
“This petition is a hefty reminder that, just as we ought consciously to depend on God for physical sustenance, so also ought we to send our dependence on him for moral triumph and spiritual victory.” (Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount and his confrontation with the world, Carson, 92)
“I know I need trials so that my nature is purified. When you decide to send me these trials, when you give evil some room to maneuver, as you did with Job, then please remember that my strength goes only so far. “ (Pope Benedict XVI, Following the Call, Moore, 239)
