NO THANK YOU NOVEMBER 24, 2024

SCRIPTURE
Now on His way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As He was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met Him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When He saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then He said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:11-19

AN ATTITUDE OF INGRATITUDE

1/ Ingratitude comes when God blesses me, but I perceive it as something I deserve.

The baseline of gratitude is understanding I deserve nothing from God.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father. James 1:17

2/ Ingratitude comes when God blesses me, but I perceive it as something I earned.

Herod believed he had earned the praises on men. And because he refused to give glory to God, an angel struck him with intestinal worms.

Remember the choirs of Nehemiah 12.

We should give thanks spontaneously and systematically. Systematic thanksgiving can seem lifeless and formal, it accomplishes two things:

It pushes us past feelings to arrive at truth.

It reminds us that every good thing comes from the Lord.

3/ Ingratitude comes when God blesses me, but I perceive it as a curse.

Many see Paul’s imprisonment as a curse. He viewed it as endless opportunities!

What you see as a set-back may actually be a set-up.

4/ Ingratitude comes when God blesses me, but I fail to express thanks.

“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Luke 6:45

God expected the lepers to give thanks. He expects us to do the same.
AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

1/ I should express gratitude for bad times, in bad times.

God may allow bad things to prevent worse things.

God may allow bad things as an ingredient for growth.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

2/ I should express gratitude for bad times, in good times.

Naturally, giving thanks for bad times often comes later because we have perspective.

3/ I should express gratitude for good times, in good times.

Life will give us plenty of bad times. Be sure to celebrate the good times!

4/ I should express gratitude for good times, in bad times.

This is when I remind myself of God’s faithfulness in the midst of the mess.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
