· A culture of outrage
o James 1:19-21 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
· A culture of fear
o “When politics becomes the new religion, the candidates start to feel like saviors, campaigning replaces evangelism, rallies start to feel like worship services, and elections start to feel like salvation or damnation.”
· A culture of noise
o “God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains. The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, was all about: “How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?” And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you more likes and comments. It's a social-validation feedback loop…exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you’re exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology.” Sean Parker
Peace
· Matthew 6, Matthew 24, John 14
· Most letters in the New Testament start with “Grace and peace to you.”
· Jesus is called the Prince of Peace.
· Jesus brought peace to us through the cross.
How do we live in peace?
Luke 5:15-16 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
· “Eremos”
1. Silence and Solitude
a. Making our home in Christ
b. A place of encounter
The path of transformation is learning to be with our pain, anger, and deepest fears, and let God be with us, so that new life can emerge in and through us.
