Holy, Upright, and Blameless Shared Lives
1 Thessalonians 2:5-10
Pastor Jerry Koller
Overall, this passage is an elaboration of what he wrote at the beginning of this letter in regard to their relationship.
Flattery is excessive or insincere praise.
Pumpkinfest is just around the corner. Children and adults alike may wear masks as a part of their costume giving the impression that they are someone—or something—other than who they really are.
When I think along these lines, I think about the Greek word for hypocrite for it has to do with someone who is acting out a part in a play. These stage-players often wore masks to portray someone they were really not. They were pretenders. They were a two-faced person.
Paul mentions he and his team never put on a mask to cover up greed. God is our witness.
· We can pull the wool over the eyes of people, but we can’t fool God.
Paul is exposing his true intentions.

If the team’s motivation was to seek personal gain, I suppose there was a way to justify this.
Paul said: ...we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. (1 Thess. 2:7) What a beautiful word picture.
I want to point out a nuance here that is not picked up by the NIV translators.
· The Greek word for mother is not found in this verse.
· This is the only place in the entire New Testament where this word is used. It has to do with the idea of one who is nursing, or a nurse.
· It comes from a verb which means to nourish or support; to bring up or nurture.
· Paul uses an everyday metaphor to illustrate the relationship the team had with the fledgling church at Thessalonica.
The ideal of loving someone here in verse 8 deals with having a high degree of fond affection like a mother would for her child.
In verse 9, Paul gives an illustration of the fond affection they had which was a part of the motivation behind their labors.
He encourages the church to follow the example he and his team set forth when they lived among them.
Not only can the saints bear witness, so can God.
· Holy is a word that means devoutly, in a manner that is pleasing to God.
· Righteous means upright, or virtuous; in keeping with the commands of God.
· Blameless means being free from blame.
APPLICATION
#1. H.U.B. Principal
The H.U.B. principal deals with some core characteristics of how we should live out our faith before God and our fellow man.
· Holy—Holy must describe our relationship with God as well as our relationships with all men.
Upright—living according to what is right and wrong—not according to the world’s standards but according to God’s standards.
Blameless—Even though you may fail at times, your heart passionately pursues God. It means your heart is devoted to God.
#2. Shared Lives
The life we live cannot—must not—be lived in isolation.
· Somewhere along the line, we have reduced discipleship to simply imparting information or carrying out some program.
· We have neglected the importance of mentorship—of taking someone under your wing so that you can show them from personal experience how one lives out their faith for the glory of God.
Is this how you are living out your faith?

Oktoberfest Offering

🍁🍂 A Time to Give 🍂🍁 Sunday, 11/3 | after worship | FBC On Sunday, November 3, we will receive a special Oktoberfest Offering.  During our morning worship service, we will have an opportunity to present a monetary gift to God in thanksgiving for His abundant blessings and in joyful celebration of being a church who is committed to being what God wants us to be.  We will receive an extremely important Oktoberfest Offering which will be used solely for payment of our building mortgage (annually about $36,000.00).  Besides celebrating God’s goodness, our Oktoberfest Celebration will also be a time when we can recommit ourselves to fulfilling God’s calling “To Know Him and Make Him Known” and to the goal of living out our faith together.
We are looking forward to what 2025 will bring as we see how God will use our building to impact the lives of others in our community.  If you are unable to join us for the service, we hope you’ll consider either mailing or making an online contribution ahead of time.  Your offering is vital to our ability to pay the mortgage.  We thank you for prayerfully considering how you can contribute.
🍁🍂 A Time of Fellowship 🍂🍁 Following our worship service on November 3, we will enjoy a time of food and fellowship with a Potluck Dinner.  Please bring a main/side dish AND a dessert to share which feeds at least 10-12 people. SIGN-UP ONLINE to let us know what you’re bringing and to avoid too many duplicate dishes.
🍁🍂 A Time to Help 🍂🍁 If you’re able to help with the potluck (set-up, serving, and/or clean-up), please SIGN-UP ONLINE or contact Kim Collins.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
