Sermon Title - Finishing Well
September 1, 2024
Finishing Well
13 of 49 Leaders featured in the Bible finished well

One-third of 3,500 Christian leaders finished well
--Dr. J. Robert Clinton, The Making of a Leader
The Struggle of Life
As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 NLT

Fight = agδn (Greek) - agony
Following Jesus requires a commitment to something bigger than ourselves. A willingness to sacrifice and endure the challenges of life
to accomplish the greater goal.

Discipline = egokratia (Greek) – ego control
“Our nature, by the corruption of the first sin, so deeply curved in on itself that it not only bends the best gifts of God towards itself and enjoys them, or rather even uses God himself in order to attain these gifts, but it also fails to realize that it so wickedly, curvedly, and viciously seeks all things, even God, for its own sake.”
--Martin Luther - Lectures on Romans, qtd. in Mark Johnston, Saving God (Princeton: Princeton University Press), 88.

Two Operating Systems
How do I use these people and their resources to serve me and my interests?

Vs

How do I give my life and my resources to serve you?
The Adventure of Death
As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.
2 Timothy 4:6-7 NLT

Poured out = spendo (Greek)
Death = untie

The Balance
Dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.
1 Thess 4:13 NLT
The Adventure of Death

“Death used to be an executioner, but the gospel has made him just a gardener.”
-- George Herbert

“Death is the supreme festival on the road to freedom.”
-- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?
1 Cor 15:55 NLT
The Ultimate Friendship
A friend always lets you in
And they never let you down

"The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength"
