James addresses the topic because something is wrong.
Job asks the question:
Sixteen verses later, he answers the question:

Gentleness carries with it the idea of being tender and gracious.
· You could also translate it as being meek.

Gentleness is a God-honoring trait.

Counterfeit Wisdom:
· It is Full of Jealousy—But if you harbor bitter envy… (vs. 14 NIV) / But if you have bitter jealousy…(NASB)
· The adjective “bitter” describes a jealousy that is harsh and sharp, a jealousy that is cutting and destructive, having no thought or concern for the feelings and welfare of those who are its objects.
· It is Full of Selfish Ambition—Selfish ambition often feeds bitter jealousy.

It’s been said that a Christian who is proud, boastful, self-centered, loveless and arrogant, is a fraud.
The Deceitful Trio—the world, the flesh, and the devil.
They are a deceitful trio. These three correspond to the next three characteristics of counterfeit wisdom as seen in this verse.

It is Earthly
It is Natural (fleshy and sensual)
It Is Demonic
The end result is that:
· The basic meaning of disorder is that of instability, a state of confusion and disarray.
· Where there is disorder there are disturbances, rebellion, even anarchy.

APPLICATION
Take a fierce personal moral and spiritual inventory.
Bring this matter before the Lord and ask Him to reveal to you any area in your life in which jealousy may surface.

Are you wise and understanding?
Does your life give evidence?

Theology Class Resumes
Session 2 will begin on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00pm upstairs. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jerry.
Flower Bed Maintenance Needed
Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.
Hearing Assistance Devices Now Available
We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.
We Care | Meijer Simply Give
This is a campaign to purchase Meijer gift cards so that much needed food items can be bought to stock pantry shelves. Last campaign, We Care received over $28,000 in gift cards. Please spread the word so that they can, once again, get that generous amount. The food pantries are spending approximately $6000 a month to maintain their stock to meet the needs of those in our community. People don't need to go to Meijer to pick up the gift cards. They can (and are encouraged to) mail a check or take cash to either the First Congregational Church or We Care office. Please specify “Meijer Simply Give” with any donations. On September 14th, We Care will take the cumulative donations to Meijer so they can run a batch of cards; the funds are matched 2-to-1, up to $5000 in donations. Any donations contributed over $5,000 will go directly to the food pantries.
Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
