Psalm 5:9-12
Pastor Jerry Koller
Psalm 5:9-12
Pastor Jerry Koller
In verse 9, David describes his enemies whom earlier he referred to as evil and wicked. Not a word from their mouth can be trusted
Four Related Characteristics:
Characteristic #1—Their heart is filled with destruction.
Characteristic #1—Their heart is filled with destruction.
The evil things that are in the hearts of evil people can be as deadly as the venom of a viper.
Characteristic #2—Their throat is an open grave.
In another interaction Jesus had with the Pharisees, Jesus refers to them as whitewashed tombs or graves.
Characteristic #3—With their tongue they speak deceit.
A better translation would be: They flatter with their tongue.
A better translation would be: They flatter with their tongue.
You think they are building you up or complimenting you, but they do not really mean what they say. They speak deceitfully.
Rather than seeking his own revenge against his enemies, David releases them into God’s hands for he knows God is perfectly capable of dealing with them.
David is recognizing God for who He is and what He stands for. He knows this is how God will deal with evil and wickedness.
In regard to God’s character, David recognized: You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you evil cannot dwell. (v. 4)
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong. (v. 5)
You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors. (v. 6)
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong. (v. 5)
You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors. (v. 6)
Then David turns his attention back to those who have received God’s great mercies. But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them that those who love your name may rejoice in you. (v. 11)
Three Attitudes that we should have because we are in Christ:
Attitude 1—We Can Be Glad.
Attitude 2—We Can Sing For Joy.
· Joy is a supernatural delight in God and in God’s ways.
· Joy is a supernatural delight in God and in God’s ways.
Attitude 3—We Can Rejoice In God.
If we are in Christ, He has blessed us in an absolutely amazing way.
David also states: …you surround them with your favor as with a shield.
God favors us in this fashion.
· We are highly privileged, highly blessed, highly favored.
· He surrounds them in such a way that no one or nothing can separate us from Him.
· We are highly privileged, highly blessed, highly favored.
· He surrounds them in such a way that no one or nothing can separate us from Him.
APPLICATION
Life for you may be hard right now, but do not let circumstances cloud the truth that you are highly loved by God.
If you are facing evil circumstances or evil people, rest assured that God will deal with them for they have rebelled against Him.
If you have taken refuge in the saving arms of Christ, you can be glad—cheerful—happy—appreciative.
Sing for joy as you keep your eyes in Christ, on the promises of God, on His kingdom, and on what will happen when He returns again.
Rejoice in God for you have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly realms.
Rejoice, for nothing can ever separate you from the love of God.

Theology Class Resumes
Session 2 will begin on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00pm upstairs. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jerry.
Flower Bed Maintenance Needed
Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.
Hearing Assistance Devices Now Available
We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.
We Care | Meijer Simply Give
This is a campaign to stock our food pantries with Meijer gift cards so that they can purchase much needed food to stock their shelves. Last campaign, we received over $28,000 in gift cards. Please spread the word so that we can, once again, get that generous amount. The food pantries are spending approximately $6000 a month to maintain their stock to meet the needs of those in our community. People don't need to go to Meijer to pick up the gift cards. They can (and are encouraged to) mail a check or take cash to either First Congregational Church or the We Care office. Please specify Meijer Simply Give with any donations. Then, on August 17th and/or September 14th, we will take the cumulative donations to Meijer so they can run a batch of cards. On both those dates, the funds are matched 2-to-1, up to $5000 in donations. Any donations contributed over $5,000 will go directly to the food pantries.
Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
