The Psalms Project

The Psalms Project is a band setting all 150 Psalms to music in their entirety, including the essential meaning of every verse, a marriage of King David’s vision with modern music. The Psalms Project is led by singer/songwriter/producer Shane Heilman, who has collaborated with over 70 musicians thus far, including Grammy nominees Phil Keaggy and Jeff Deyo, to produce The Psalms Project’s first five albums.

Summer Psalms - Week 7 - What Story Are You Passing Along?

- Deuteronomy 6:7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

The Psalms of Asaph - Psalms 50, 73–83

-Psalm 50: 14-15 “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

- 1 Chronicles 16:4-6 David appointed some of the Levites to be ministers before the ark of the Lord, to celebrate the Lord God of Israel, and to give thanks and praise to him. Asaph was the chief and Zechariah was second to him… while Asaph sounded the cymbals and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel blew the trumpets regular before the ark of the covenant of God.

- Nehemiah 7:7 The number of the Israelite men included…" And then it lists over 80 groups of descendants who returned home. All the way down in verse 44, it says, "...The singers included Asaph’s descendants… 148.

Asaph played the cymbals in 1,000 B.C…148 of his descendants were singing to God in 500 B.C.

-Psalm 78 78:1-3 A Maskil of Asaph. My people, hear my instruction; listen to the words from my mouth.I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past—things we have heard and knownand that our ancestors have passed down to us.

1.Our Next Generation Obligation Is To Pass On Our Faith

- Psalm 78:4 We will not hide them from their children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his might, and the wondrous worksHe has performed.
- Psalm 78:5-6 He established a testimony in Jacob and set up a law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.
- Psalm 78:6-7 The people of that generation…They were to rise and tell their children so that they might put their confidence in God and not forget God’s works, but keep his commands.

2. If We Teach God’s Deeds To Our Children They Will Put Their Confidence In Him.

Everybody puts their confidence in something.

- Psalm 78:8 Then they would not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The nation of Israel was made up of 12 tribes.
- Joseph
-Levi
-Judah

Joseph’s tribe : 2 tribes
- Ephraim
- Manasseh

- Psalm 78:9-11 The Ephraimite archers turned back on the day of battle. They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law. They forgot what he had done, the wondrous works he had shown them.

3. If We Don't Teach God’s Deeds Our Tribe Will Crumble

The people of Ephraim did three things wrong:
V.9 They shrunk back on the day of battle.
V.10 refused to live by the Law.
V. 11 They forgot what God had done.

- Psalm 78:12 He worked wonders in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.

- Psalm 78:13 He split the sea and brought them across; the water stood firm like a wall.

- Psalm 78:14 He led them with a cloud by day and with a fiery light throughout the night.

- Psalm 78:15-16 He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as abundant as the depths. He brought streams out of the stone and made water flow down like rivers.

Psalm 78 is 72 verses long.

- Psalm 78:27 He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
- Psalm 78:32,36-39 Despite all this, they kept sinning and did not believe his wondrous works...But they deceived him with their mouths, they lied to him with their tongues, their hearts were insincere toward him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.Yet he was compassionate; he atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them.He often turned his anger aside and did not unleash all his wrath. He remembered that they were only flesh, a wind that passes and does not return.

Even when they were not faithful, God remained faithful.

- Psalm 78:41 They constantly tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

- Psalm 78:42-43 They did not remember his power shown on the day he redeemed them from the foe, when he performed his miraculous signs in Egypt and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.

When we forget what God has done, we start living by sight and not by faith.

- Psalm 78:67-72 He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim. He chose instead the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved. He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; he brought him from tending ewes to be shepherd over his people Jacob—over Israel, his inheritance. He shepherded
them with a pure heart and guided them with his skillful hands.

When we remember, we trust. And when we trust, we walk by faith.

How to Pass on Your Faith to Future Generations:
1. Teach them what God has done.
2. Teach them that God doesn’t change.

- Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.”

What He has done in the past, He will do in the future.

3. Teach them what God has done for your family.

- Psalm 78:4 “We will not hide them from our children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his might, and the wondrous works he has performed.

What story will you tell this week?

…who will you tell it to?
…when will you tell it?
