A Cry for Help
Psalm 5:1-3
Pastor Jerry Koller
For the director of music. For flutes. A psalm of David.
· It is to be sung either by the director of music or led by the director of music.
· It is accompanied by flutes.
Psalm 5 is arranged in a wonderful way - like a sandwich.
· In verses 1-3 we find a Plea.
· In verse 12 we find a Promise.
· Within these verses are sandwiched three focal points.
David uses a writing technique whereby the thoughts presented, although similar, increase with intensity.
· Give ear to my words
· Consider my sighing/groaning
· Listen to my cry for help
Knowing where his hope rests, David directs his prayer to God and God alone. He said, for to you, I pray.
In the morning
· The first “in the morning” is mentioned from God’s perspective, when God hears David’s voice.
· The second “in the morning” is mentioned in regard to when David presents his requests to God.
Waiting With Expectation—Finally, after he made his requests known to God, David waited - with expectation.
Point #1 - We Have Instant Access to the Throne
While the author clearly tells us we can approach the throne of grace with confidence as we pray, He does not say God will answer our prayers exactly the way we want Him to.
· He says to come confidently to the throne of grace so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need.
· God told the Apostle Paul, as recorded in 2 Cor. 12:9
Point #2 - Start the Day with God
· It helps establish who or what is a priority in your life.
· It acknowledges who is the source of help and guidance for your day.
· It reflects the importance of communication in relationships.
Point #3 - Wait With Expectation
· The word of God tells us we can come to God in confidence:
· Confidence in God
· That He will hear us and answer our prayer according to His perfect will.
APPLICATION
We need to come before God in anticipation.
Then we wait to see what His answer is with expectation.

Two Weeks Left |School Supplies Collection: Now thru 8/11

We have been requested to do a school supplies collection for El Ayudante in Honduras for their upcoming school year [https://elayudanteinhonduras.com/]. Denise Hodge (daughter of Stan & Jean Robinson) who serves at this mission-based clinic asks that the backpacks be of good quality so they will last the entire school year. Other items needed are: spiral notebooks, dry erase markers, compasses, protractors, and packs of pens and pencils. We will be collecting items through Sunday, 8/11. IF YOU WOULD PREFER TO MAKE A CASH DONATION AND HAVE US SHOP FOR YOU, WE WILL HAVE A CONTAINER IN THE BACK OF THE SANCTUARY FOR YOU TO LEAVE A MONETARY GIFT. PLEASE MAKE THE NOTATION "HONDURAS" ON IT. Please consider making a donation if you are able. Thank you!

Theology Class Resumes

Session 2 will begin on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00pm upstairs. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jerry.

Flower Bed Maintenance Needed

Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.

Hearing Assistance Devices Now Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

We Care News

· The Secretary of State mobile office is coming to South Haven on Friday, August 16th. Flier attached. They will be at Peace Lutheran Church, and anyone can schedule an appointment - they must call We Care (269-637-4342) to sign up. We have to have at least 10 people sign up, or they won't come.
· Meijer Simply Give - This is a campaign to stock our food pantries with Meijer gift cards so that they can purchase much needed food to stock their shelves. Last campaign, we received over $28,000 in gift cards. Please spread the word so that we can, once again, get that generous amount. The food pantries are spending approximately $6000 a month to maintain their stock to meet the needs of those in our community. People don't need to go to Meijer to pick up the gift cards. They can (and are encouraged to) mail a check or take cash to either First Congregational Church or the We Care office. Please specify Meijer Simply Give with any donations. Then, on August 17th and/or September 14th, we will take the cumulative donations to Meijer so they can run a batch of cards. On both those dates, the funds are matched 2-to-1, up to $5000 in donations. Any donations contributed over $5,000 will go directly to the food pantries.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!

· Sierra Hunter (Allie Wilson's niece) had a liver transplant a few years ago and she is now having liver problems again due to an autoimmune disease. She is hospitalized at U of M Hospital in intensive care with sepsis.
· Alexis Kasinger (a classmate of Olivia Price) who is recovery from serious injuries following a car accident.
· Patty Bales is recovering from foot surgery.
· Sandy (Tracy Quist’s mom) has had cancer for 13 years and it has spread to her bones, lungs and brain. She is recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor and is getting radiation treatments. Please pray for Tracy’s mom and dad to put all hope and trust in God and to resist worry, that the treatment will help and her side effects will be minimal.
· Donna Jinkins (neighbor of Jean Robinson) continues to decline and the only hope for her is if she can have a liver transplant and there is concern that she'd be strong enough for surgery if one even becomes available. Please keep her and her family in prayer.
· Lennon McKamey (son of Kyle & Sarah) needs surgery on his shoulder. Please pray that preparing for surgery goes smoothly.
· Jean Pietrzak (Sandi Starland's sister) is doing much better. She still has a neck brace and is using a walker while continuing physical therapy.
· Joyce Bocock continues to do well. Prayers for continued improvement and relief from pain are appreciated.
· Check out our monthly prayer card on-line at southhavenfbc.com under “Weekly Bulletins” for a list of those with on-going needs.
