A Prayer of Repentance
Psalm 51:1-17
Psalm 51:1-17
In David’s prayer of repentance, we learn to:
I. Recognize sin for what it is.
David asked God to:
A. “Blot out my transgressions,” verse 1.
Transgression is “to revolt, rebellion; willful defiance of known authority.”
B. “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,” verse 2a.
Iniquity is “to crook, twist, pervert morally.”
C. “And cleanse me from my sin,” verse 2b.
Sin is “to miss the specified mark, goal; consciously or unconsciously.”
II. Personalize sin for what it is in our life.
David personalized sin by identifying it as:
A. “My transgression,” verse 1.
B. “My iniquity,” verse 2a.
C. “My sin,” verse 2b.
D. “I sinned,” verse 4a.
David discovered what James teaches us about sin in James 1:13-16:
A. Sin is deceptive.
B. Sin is addictive.
C. Sin is destructive.
III. Vocalize sin in repentance to God.
A. David realized his need, verses 1-2.
B. David confessed his guilt, verses 3-4.
C. David redirected his life, verses 7-17.
Is it time for you to vocalize your repentance in prayer to the Lord?
