John’s Four Purposes In Writing His Letters:
1. To teach us how to stand up to false teachers. (1 John)
(1 Juan)
2. To remind us about the attitude we ought to have towards sin and the need to love others. (2 John)
(2 Juan)
3. To convey his pastoral heart and strengthen his hearer’s faith. (3 John)
(3 Juan)
4. To inform us of his personal purpose for writing: “… so that our joy may be complete…” (1 John 1:4) [ESV]
(1 Juan 1:4)

• John affirms Jesus as the “Word of Life.”
“1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you…” (1 John 1:1-3a) [ESV]
(1 Juan 1:1-3a) [NVI]

John’s favorite way to describe Jesus is “the Word of Life.”

Jesus did come to earth and took up a literal human body!

• John actually heard and saw the incarnate Jesus!
• ¡Juan realmente oyó y vio al Jesús encarnado!
“… we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands…” (1 John 1:1b) [ESV]
(1 Juan 1:1) [NVI]

John is emphasizing a historical fact/reality!
¡Juan está enfatizando un hecho/realidad histórica!

“See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” (Luke 24:39) [ESV]
“Miren mis manos y mis pies. ¡Soy yo mismo! (Lucas 24:39) NVI]

• John testifies and proclaims that Jesus is THE One that brings forgiveness of sins and eternal life!
“… 3 so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” (1 John 1:3b-4) [ESV]
(1 Juan 1:3b-4) [NVI]

“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent…” (John 17:3) [ESV]
(Juan 17:3) [NVI]

• John gives us the reason why he is preaching a real incarnate Jesus.
1. “…so that you too may have fellowship with us…” (1 John 1:3) [ESV]
(1 Juan 1:3) [NVI]

Ways We Share In Fellowship With Each Other:
Loving - Giving - Serving - Suffering
Amar - Dar - Servir - Sufrir

Ways We Share In Fellowship With God:
Communion and partnership

2. “…so that our joy may be complete.” (1 John 1:4)
2. “…para que nuestra alegría sea completa.” (1 Juan 1:4)
“.. may be complete.” = permanently full; permanently filled!
“..puede estar completo.” = ¡permanentemente lleno; permanentemente lleno!
