First, Jesus is giving the final of three parables to support His teaching to the disciples in a response to their questions concerning the destruction of Jerusalem that He has been predicting.
Second, while Jesus' prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem is not the end times, it is some how connected.
Third, Jesus' main point has been that His followers need to be ready. Being ready is being found faithful to His Kingdom of mission. His Kingdom mission is to be taking care of God's household. That is the people God brings into your life whether for a moment, a season, or a whole lifetime.

OBSERVATIONS
First, just as in some of Jesus' other parables, it is God's job to judge not ours. Here the King is separating the people into two groups: 1). The Sheep; and 2). The Goats.
Second, Jesus equates loving others in need withe directly loving HIm. Jesus is saying the Sheep are the people who are living out Kingdom. They are bringing Kingdom to others. The Goats are like the Pharisees and Sadducees who are not producing the Kingdom fruit of caring for God's household.
Third, Jesus indicates that faithfulness and eternal life are connected to a heart that is full of compassionate generosity. The Goats, like the third servant in the previous parable, are more concerned with themselves than others and by inference their King Jesus. Notice both the Sheep and the Goats do not recognize Jesus in need. The difference between the two groups is compassionate generosity!
