Proverbs 12:26 (ESV)
Proverbs 12:26 (ESV)
Insight: In Biblical times, salt was an important commodity in Jewish society. It was used for many things, including preserving meat and fish, adding flavor to food and even as payment method.
Read Matthew 5:13-16.
https://www.bible.com/bible/111/MAT.5.13-16.niv1. In this passage, Jesus invites us to be salt and light. What does this mean to you?
2. What does Jesus want His disciples to understand about being salt and light?
3. How did Jesus want His disciples to respond to this? How is He calling you to respond?
4. When salt lost its flavor in Jesus' culture, people would cast it on the road so that it would be trampled and not be used for anything else. How do you keep yourself pure (salty)?
5. What would it be like to show your light to others?
6. Where in your work or home life can you be a light to others?
7. What causes you to struggle to be a light to others, and what can you do to overcome it?
8. According to Jesus, what results from us shining our light in the world?
9. How has your light brought someone closer to Jesus?
10. What does it mean for Jesus' light to shine in you?
11. What does the light of Jesus help you notice about yourself? About others? About things around you?
12. How have you dealt with someone who tried to keep you from sharing your faith?
13. What step could you take to allow Jesus to increase your saltiness or brighten your light? What would that look like?
14. Pause and ask God what He wants to say to you. Take time to listen to what the Father has to say. Write down any thoughts or verses that He brings to your mind.
Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you others can see Him. C.S. Lewis
