Numbers 9
The Back Story
God is Always Actively at Work for Our Good to His Glory
9:1-5 God reminds His people to celebrate His Saving Grace
A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the Lord spoke to Moses…In the first month of that year he said, 2 “Tell the Israelites to celebrate the Passover…”
Justin Earley, Habits of the Household:
“Habits are fascinating little things. They are the things we do over and over, semiconsciously to unconsciously. By definition they are little. But the aggregate impact of habits is as big as each habit is small. Habits occupy much of our time, they form most of our minds.
There is a neurological reason for this…Good or bad, a rut is a rut, and our brains love ruts…In other words: You can’t think yourself out of a pattern you didn’t think yourself into. You practiced yourself into it, so you have to practice your way out…The mind and heart always follow the habit.
Why? Because habits are kinds of liturgies. They are little rituals of worship, and worship changes what we love.
What are some of yours?

9:9-14 God goes out of His way to meet us where we are at
If any of the people now or in future generations are ceremonially unclean at Passover time because of touching a dead body, or if they are on a journey and cannot be present at the ceremony, they may still celebrate the Lord’s Passover.
What stories do you have of God going out of His way to meet you with His grace?

9:15-23 God guides His people with His presence and Word
On the day the Tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered it. But from evening until morning the cloud over the Tabernacle looked like a pillar of fire. 16 This was the regular pattern—at night the cloud that covered the Tabernacle had the appearance of fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel would break camp and follow it… 23 So they camped or traveled at the Lord’s command, and they did whatever the Lord told them through Moses.
