1. Blessed.
"beggarly poor"
“Since this is God’s universe, there can be no higher “blessing” than to be approved by God.” (Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount and His confrontation with the World, D. A. Carson, 20).
2. Blessed are those who mourn.
“In its plainest and most familiar meaning, mourning is grief over some kind of profound loss.” (A deeper look at the Sermon on the Mount, Stott, 20)
“The starting point for the early church was this awareness of the abyss of sin inside each person, the murky depth of which only the top few inches are visible.” (Following the Call-Living the Sermon on the Mount together, Mathewes-Green, Moore, 38)
“They have failed to see that they must be convicted of sin before they can ever experience joy. They do not like the doctrine of sin…They want joy apart from the conviction of sin. But that is impossible, it can never be obtained….Conviction is an essential preliminary to true conversion.” (Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, Lloyd-Jones, 45)
Luke 6:21b “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh; 25b “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.”
“Laughter is essential, but the world despises sorrow so much that it has gone wild in its attempt to avoid it. Moderns have structured their lives to maximize entertainment and amusement in an attempt to make life one big party.” (The Sermon on the Mount, Hughes, 28)
3. You shall be comforted.
“For it is when a man sees himself in this unutterable hopelessness that the Holy Spirit reveals unto him the Lord Jesus Christ as his perfect satisfaction. Through the Spirit he sees that Christ has died for his sins and is standing as his advocate in the presence of God. He sees in Him the perfect provision that God has made and immediately he is comforted.” (Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, Lloyd-Jones, 49)
“If you have never sorrowed over sin in your life (not just its consequences, but sin itself), then consider long and carefully whether you really are a Christian. Genuine believers, those who are truly born again, have mourned, and continue to mourn, over sin. (The Sermon on the Mount, Hughes, 30)
“Man of Sorrows, What a Name” - P.P. Bliss

v. 1 Man of sorrows what a name for the Son of God,
who came ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah, what a Savior!

v. 2 Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned he stood,
sealed my pardon with his blood: Hallelujah, what a Savior!

v. 3 Guilty, helpless, lost were we; blameless Lamb of God was he,
sacrificed to set us free: Hallelujah, what a Savior!

v. 4 He was lifted up to die; "It is finished" was his cry;
now in heaven exalted high: Hallelujah, what a Savior!

v. 5 When he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home to bring,
then anew this song we'll sing: Hallelujah, what a Savior!
