1. Worship is not about what I usually assume
2. Worship is founded on relationship
Worship is found in what I adore and value the most.

START TALKING
When have you experienced someone or something valuing you and adoring you so much that they just wanted to be with you above anything else?
When have you adored or valued something or someone so much that it is what got the best (or a lot of) your time, money, and thoughts? Don't worry - we all have them - hobbies, relationships, etc. - so don't be afraid to share the non-spiritual examples, too, that help point out how we are all wired to worship.

START THINKING
Read John 4:20. While this woman asks Jesus about which mountain should be the place of worship, what do you think this question might have been if this conversation took place in East Tennessee in 2024? What are the things like this that are the modern version of this debate?
Read John 4:21. What do you think is the significance of Jesus saying that this doesn't matter? What are the things that we think matter (or we assume they matter) that Jesus might tell us are not what really matter to Him? Does it mean that they don't matter at all?

START SHARING
Read John 4:22. Jesus connects real worship to relationship. When have you experienced your worship grow because your relationship with Jesus grew? When have you experienced that it was hard to worship because your relationship with Jesus was struggling? How does thinking about the relationship between a child and a parent, and the natural adoration that comes in that earthly relationship, help you think about the relationship that your Father wants with you so that you can experience true worship?
Read John 4:23. If we studied each word of this very closely, we would find that to worship means literally to be willing to make all necessary physical gestures to show deference and reverence to someone. To do that in spirit is to do so as if it is our very breath and the very essence of who we are. And to do it in truth means sincerely, the opposite of superstition or expecting to get anything in return as a result of it. Have you ever experienced a time when you worshipped in spirit and it was just the natural expression of your very being and who you are? What was it like? How did you experience this?
If you were honest, how often do you find yourself wanting to worship because you hope it manipulates God in some way to do what you want Him to do? He wants us to come to him in our times of need, but more than that he wants us to come to him in truth - sincerely with no strings attached! What are the ways or reasons you may find yourself coming to Him to get something rather than simply to give adoration?
How does thinking through what or who gets the best of each of these below convict you that you may be worshipping other gods before Jesus?

START DOING
What can you do this week to give Jesus the best of your worship? If that means giving Jesus the best of your time, money, and thoughts, what would you actually do differently this week? What is a next step that you can take so that Jesus is enough to get the best of your worship in at least these three areas?

START PRAYING
Pray for each person in the micro church to do what you each shared in the previous point. Pray that it leads to missional opportunities as the people around each of us where we live, work, and play will see true worshippers and long to have the same relationship with Jesus.
