PRAYING MEN OF THE NEW TESTAMENT APRIL 3, 2024
#1 THE PRAYERS OF JESUS

“Prayer lays hold of God's plan and becomes the link between his will and its accomplishment on earth. Amazing things happen, and we are given the privilege of being the channels of the Holy Spirit's prayer.”
- Elisabeth Elliot

SCRIPTURE
“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10

Central Truth: There are over 27 recorded prayers of Jesus in the New Testament gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). It is safe to say Jesus prioritized prayer during his earthly ministry.

Who was JESUS?
JESUS was the son of God who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died a substitutionary death for the sins of mankind. He rose from the dead by the power of God the Father and ascended to heaven and is ever our mediator before God.

How was prayer a priority of JESUS’s Life?

1/ Jesus Taught the Disciples How To Pray.

a. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray:
“Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13

2/ Jesus’ Prayer of Thanks

a. “I thank You, Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was Your gracious will.” Matthew 11:25-26 ESV

3/ Jesus’ Prayer Before Raising Lazarus from the Dead

a. “Father, I thank You that You have heard me. I knew that You always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that You sent Me.”John 11:41-42

4/ Jesus’ Prayer After Entering Jerusalem

a. “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name!” John 12:27-28

5/ Jesus prayed for His Kingdom Family!

a. Jesus prayed for His glory to be revealed.

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. John 17:1-5

b. Jesus prayed for His disciples.

“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. John 17:6-19

c. Jesus Prayed for All Believers.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,

21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one. 23 I in them and you in me so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” John 17:20-26

6/ Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

a. Jesus prays for the cup to be taken from Him.

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”Matthew 26:39

b. Jesus prays for His Father’s will to be done.

He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” Matthew 26:42

c. Jesus prays for all believers.

So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. Matthew 26:44

7/ Jesus prayed on the cross.

a. “Father forgive them; for they know not what they do” Luke 23:34

b. “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34

c. “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit” Luke 23:46

PRAYING MEN OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
#2 Times When JESUS Prayed

If the heart wanders or is distracted, bring it back to the point quite gently and replace it tenderly in its Master's presence. And even if you did nothing during the whole of your hour but bring your heart back and place it again in our Lord's presence, though it went away every time you brought it back, your hour will be very well employed. St. Francis de Sales

SCRIPTURE
Rejoice always,17 pray continually,18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Central Truth: Jesus, who was God in the flesh, was dependent on His Father in every circumstance as a man and conversed with Him regularly through the means of prayer.

Who was JESUS?

JESUS was the son of God who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died a substitutionary death for the sins of mankind. He rose from the dead by the power of God the Father and ascended to heaven and is ever our mediator before God.

When did JESUS Pray?

1. On Special Occasions

a. “When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened” Luke 3:21 NIV

b. Jesus was praying as He was being baptized; it was a special occasion.

c. Baptisms, holidays, weddings, funerals, reunions, and other special events offer a reminder and an occasion for prayer.

2. During Demanding Seasons

a. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1 NIV

b. Jesus entered the Judean wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

c. When we face demanding seasons, prayer can help us face and meet the challenge.

3. Before a Big Decision

a. One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them. Luke 6:12-13 NIV

b. On the night before choosing His 12 closest disciples, Jesus “spent the night praying to God”

d. How often do we try to face such weighty moments all on our own, rather than turning to God for wisdom and guidance?

4. When Missing Someone

a. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.Luke 5:16 NIV

b. Maybe JESUS missed the kind of uninterrupted heavenly fellowship with the Father and Holy Spirit that He had enjoyed before taking on human flesh.

c. Prayer in “lonely places” can temper our loneliness when we’re missing someone.

5. In Concert with Others

a. About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.Luke 9:28 NIV

b. On that occasion, Jesus’ three closest friends were there to see Him in the company of two other friends—Elijah and Moses!

c. Some of the most transformative times of prayer for us will be when we pray with others!

6. When in Need

a. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Luke 22:40

b. The Gospels form an amazing depiction of the Son of God and Son of Man in great and urgent need.

c. The Bible urges us to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Ephesians 6:18 NIV
7. When in Pain

a. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,lemasabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). Matthew 27:46

b. Jesus prayed repeatedly while in pain on the cross. He cried out in desperation, quoting from a psalm that told the whole tale of His suffering.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?Why are you so far from saving me,so far from my cries of anguish? Psalm 22:1

c. We follow His example when we pray in pain—even when our prayers are unartful or inarticulate.
