KEY THOUGHT...

MEEKNESS IS NOT WEAKNESS. BEING MEEK IMITATES THE CHARACTER OF JESUS AND IT SIGNIFIES WE ARE HIS HEIRS
1. MEEKNESS DEFINED...
Matthew 5:5…“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

- My journey: tale of two Mike’s || Mike 1: able to hear criticism, correction, even unfair judgments and not let it really affect me and my emotions || Mike 2: sometimes the smallest criticism, correction or judgment wrecks me, causes me to get defensive, angry, wanting retaliation || Q: how would you define meekness?

- Some Synonyms: demure, lowly, modest, unpretentious, submissive, quiet, shy, docile, weak-kneed, wimpish, weak…

That is not at all what the word meant when Jesus used it, the Greek has a very different meaning…Meekness is not Weakness…it is Power held in check…

EXAMPLES:
A. JESUS: [MATTHEW 11:28-30] “28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am GENTLE and LOWLY IN HEART, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

B. MOSES: [NUM 12:1-9] Moses was the meekest man on the planet “3 Now the man Moses was very MEEK, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.” || Now, what is the point of calling Moses MEEK right here in this context — right between bitter opposition and God’s judgment? Just where we would expect the text to tell us what Moses said to justify himself against the charge of Miriam and Aaron, we see here that “he was the MEEKEST man on the earth”, now that is saying something! Moses doesn’t say a word. Instead, he waits patiently for the Lord. He doesn’t get bent out of shape over these critical words. And God comes to his defense. So MEEKNESS means committing your cause to God and not needing to defend yourself.

C. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: [GALATIANS 5:22-23] “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 GENTLENESS, self-control…” || MEEKNESS/gentleness is a product of the Holy Spirit, as we walk in the Spirit, submit our lives to the Spirit, being filled with the Spirit, that is the only way we will consistently walk in MEEKNESS…
2. THE TRAITS OF A MEEK PERSON...

—> JESUS WAS QUOTING THIS VERSE:
[PSALM 37:11] “But the MEEK shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” || So what does Psalm 37 tell us about the qualities of a MEEK person? Several things!

A. A MEEK person puts their trust in God and commits their way to Him.
[PSALM 37:5] “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” || We trust him, no matter what, no matter what the situation is, and give to him our anxieties, our frustrations, our plans, our relationships, our jobs, our health. He will act…(his way, his plan, his timing)

B. A MEEK person waits patiently for the Lord.
[PSALM 37:7] “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not (don’t worry or be anxious) yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!” || We trust his timing and his power and his grace to work things out in the best way for his glory and for our good.

C. A MEEK person won’t be quick to get angry or irritated.
[PSALM 37:8] “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.” || But instead, like Moses, we give our cause over to God and let him vindicate us, if he chooses.

D. A MEEK person is slow to speak and quick to listen.
[JAMES 1:19-21] “19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with MEEKNESS the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” || So MEEKNESS is teachability. To receive the word with MEEKNESS means that we don’t have a resistant, hostile spirit when we are being taught. It doesn’t mean we are gullible. It doesn’t even mean that we will never get angry about what some people teach…but we are able to be taught and corrected.

E. A MEEK person is reasonable and open to being corrected.
[PROVERBS 27:5-6] “Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.” || A MEEK person refrains from revenge and defensiveness. Being MEEK controls your wrath and leaves its vindication to God. “MEEKNESS is the power to absorb adversity and criticism without lashing back.”

F. A MEEK person is aware of their own weaknesses and sin when correcting another person.
[GALATIANS 6:1] “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of GENTLENESS. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.” || speak from a deep conviction of your own weaknesses, your own susceptibility to sin and your own absolute dependence on the mercy, grace and forgiveness of God.

THE FULL PICTURE OF A MEEK PERSON… QUOTE: JOHN PIPER “Meekness begins when we put our trust in God. || Then, because we trust him, we commit our way to him. We give to him our anxieties, our frustrations, our plans, our relationships, our jobs, our health. || And then we wait patiently for the Lord. We trust his timing and his power and his grace to work things out in the best way for his glory and for our good. || The result of trusting God and the giving all of our anxieties to him and waiting patiently for him is that we don’t give way to quick anger. But instead, like Moses, we hold back our wrath and anger handing our cause over to God and let him vindicate us, if he chooses. || And then, as James says, in this quiet confidence we are slow to speak and quick to listen. We become reasonable and open to correction. Meekness loves to learn and counts the correction of a friend as precious. || And when one must say a critical word to a person caught in sin or error, they speak from the deep conviction of their own fallibility and their own susceptibility to sin and their utter dependence on the grace of God.”
3. THE INHERITANCE OF A MEEK PERSON...

Matthew 5:5…“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

- Those people who are poor in spirit (who understand their spiritual bankruptcy), who mourn their sin, who are MEEK...there is an inheritance awaiting them, a future with God, an eternity with God

A. “BLESSED”…these MEEK people ultimately will be happy, satisfied because of their MEEKNESS…which those listeners would have been surprised by…because it wasn’t the MEEK that were happy, it was the rich, the powerful, the righteous people (in their own eyes) who possessed the land/earth…and for Jesus to say “nope, it isn’t you, it is those who you ignore, and disregard and marginalize that are going to be the ones who inherit my kingdom and all of my blessings!

B. “THEY”…only those who are meek get this reward, and them only (not who our world promotes as the winners)

C. “INHERIT”…God throughout the OT promised the Israelites a land, a home, a place they would get as a blessing from him, but it was still his to own, they didn’t own it…they “ENTERED” it || but this is different…we don’t just enter it, we “INHERIT” it! We are HEIRS, sons and daughters and this is a reward to us

- There are at least two things we as believers will inherit:
1. Is the earth in the Millennial Kingdom when Jesus returns to the earth for his 1000 year reign
2. Will be the earth for eternity when Jesus creates the New Heaven and New Earth || both of these represent our reigning with him for eternity, our fellowship with him for eternity as heirs, as his children

It also is just another way to say we are going to receive all the blessings of God, his presence, his eternal glory, all of the things that he gives us as his kids || now (every spiritual blessing) and for eternity!
