I. THE TEACHERS WHO HATED HIM
SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 6:1-10
WHO WERE THE TEACHERS IN JESUS’ DAY?
1. Pharisees
2. Sadducees
3. Scribes
4. High Priests
5. Sanhedrin
WHY DID THEY DESPISE OR HATE HIM SO MUCH?
HE WAS A THREAT TO THEIR AUTHORITY.
The Pharisees and Sadducees felt threatened by Jesus' growing popularity and influence (John 7:48). The Pharisees criticized Jesus for healing on the Sabbath (Luke 6:6-11, Mark 3:1-6). They saw Jesus as a lawbreaker. They saw him as a challenge to their religious authority and traditions (John 11:48).
HE EXPOSED THE MATTERS OF THEIR HEARTS.
Jesus rebuked the religious leaders for their hypocrisy. Jesus called the Pharisees hypocrites for neglecting justice and mercy (Matthew 23:23, Luke 11:42). Jesus condemned the outward religiosity of the Pharisees while inwardly they were full of greed and self-indulgence (Matthew 23:25-28, Luke 11:39-41).
II. THE PRIESTS WHO BOUGHT HIM
The Israelites wished to be a community ruled over by God and therefore, through the agency of the priests.
You had to be born in a certain family to be a priest—it was exclusive and very conservative—they were not only the priests but also statesmen (Politicians) Very influential and very powerful.
Luke 19:45-47
The Sadducees only got involved when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, (John 11) They never believed in the resurrection!
The high priest Caiaphas John 11:49-50
The roll of the priest was to teach; to sanctify; and to govern
Matt 26:14-16
Using words like trust, betrayal, and friend in a sentence doesn’t paint a comforting picture.
III. THE TRAITOR THAT SOLD HIM
John 13:18–30 NIV
John 6:70-71 NIV
Jeremiah 17:9 NIV
The worst thing about betrayal is that it is never done by your enemies. Have you ever been betrayed, by a friend, a family member?
It hurts doesn’t it?
The Character of Judas
- Judas didn’t change.
- Judas wanted to give Jesus something but not everything
- Judas called worship – WASTE
- Judas knew about Jesus
- Judas didn’t finish his assignment
To what extent betrayal will scar our lives is dependent on our answer to this question, “What place have I given Jesus in my heart?”
