North Platte Berean Church
But Now...
Did you realize that Paul's letter to the Romans is his only NT letter to a church he hadn't planted or at least visited? Paul was eager to keep taking the good news of Jesus where it had never been heard, and Rome could be a great place for launching a gospel ministry into Spain. But in many ways, Paul was an unknown to the church there. So, rather than spend a lot of time addressing their dysfunctions (like he does, say, with the Corinthians), Paul offers an overview of his teaching, beginning with foundational understandings about the gospel and its implications for unity between Jews and Gentiles. (This was one of the great social divides of the time and presented a key challenge for the Roman church.) Join in as we explore how these same gospel foundations have the power to bring hope and unity in our lives still today!

1. A divine attribute (God's RIGHTEOUS character - he always does right)
2. A divine activity (God is making people righteous like himself)
3. A divine achievement (God has already legally declared us "Not guilty!")
(How, right)
(What's, wrong)
(making, right, right)
21 But now, quite apart from the law (though the law and the prophets bore witness to it), God’s covenant justice has been displayed. 22 God’s covenant justice comes into operation through the faithfulness of Jesus the Messiah, for the benefit of all who have faith. For there is no distinction: 23 all sinned, and fell short of God’s glory— 24 and by God’s grace they are freely declared to be in the right, to be members of the covenant, through the redemption which is found in the Messiah, Jesus. 25 God put Jesus forth as the place of mercy, through faithfulness, by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his covenant justice, because of the passing over (in divine forbearance) of sins committed beforehand. 26 This was to demonstrate his covenant justice in the present time: that is, that he himself is in the right, and that he declares to be in the right everyone who trusts in the faithfulness of Jesus.

• How is God’s righteous character displayed at the cross?
• Read verses 25 & 26 in the New Living Translation. Why was his blood sacrifice necessary? (npberean.org/beyond12)
