https://www.brookwoodchurch.org/groupsJesus goes to the Pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath and heals a man who had been sick for 38 years. Jesus asks the man a surprising question and then heals the man. Jesus’ miracles happened in surprising and unexpected ways.
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?” John 5:6 (NIV)

1. Close your eyes and imagine the scene at the Pool of Bethesda. What images stand out to you and how do they help you enter into the story?
2. The people around the Pool of Bethesda were all waiting for something to happen in a specific way, not looking for how God might help. Think of a time when you were waiting for something to happen in the way you wanted instead of inviting God in. What impact did that have on your relationship with God?
3. This man had been sick for 38 years. What in your life have you been dealing with for a long time? How has comfortability or familiarity caused you to hold on to it?
4. What might Jesus see in you that would move Him to ask if you want to get well?
5. This man didn’t know who Jesus was, yet immediately responded to Jesus when told to get up. How do you react when Jesus acts in your life?
6. The Jewish leaders ignored the miracle and focused on when Jesus performed it. They said that Jesus had violated the law. How has focusing on the do’s and don’ts kept you from knowing Jesus?
7. How has being transformed by Jesus changed how you live? Share your story with someone this week.
