Community Group Conversation Starters
Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our Monday lives. Please know that these questions are meant to be a resource. You do not have to follow them verbatim or get through them all. We trust you to know your group and to ask the questions based on your group needs.

1. Read Matthew 22:15-21 and Titus 3:1-5.

2. How might Christians’ political engagement in our culture be a barrier for people to follow Jesus?

3. Do you think the problem is more about the fact that Christians are engaging in politics, or is it about the posture Christians have in politics? Why?

4. What did you learn from the sermon and scripture passage about how Christians should view politics and use their own political power?

5. How does what you learned affect what you plan to do or how you plan to behave during the national elections this year?

Take time to share prayer requests and pray together.

Prayer Requests

As a staff it is a privilege to pray for our congregation. Social distance does not change that! If you are in need of prayer click the link to fill out an online prayer request.

Title: But What About Christianity and Politics?
Scripture: Matthew 22:15-21; Titus 3:1-5
Speaker: Tom Nelson, TomN@cckc.church
How Should Followers of Jesus Navigate Politics?
1. Why Are Christians Often Vilified For Political Engagement?
2. What Biblical Principles Should Guide Our Political Engagement?
3. How Are We To Be Salt and Light In The Public Square?
1. Why Are Christians Often Vilified For Political Engagement?
2. What Biblical Principles Should Guide Our Political Engagement?

Principle # 1 God is sovereign over all dimensions of reality.
Principle # 2 Government has a legitimate sphere of sovereignty.
Principle # 3 Christians have a dual citizenship to steward.
Principle # 4 Christians are to be virtuous and wise in the public sphere.
“I have consistently preached that nonviolence demands that the means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek. So I have tried to make clear that it is wrong to use immoral means to attain immoral ends. But now I must affirm that it is just as wrong, or even more, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends.” - Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
3. How Are We To Be Salt & Light In The Public Square?
• Be a faithful non-anxious presence wherever God has called you.
• Pray for government leaders at all levels.
• Be an informed, prayerful, and regular voter.
• If God calls you to a political vocation, steward it well.
