James 4:1
What causes fights and quarrels among you? NIV
James 4:1-2
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. NIV
The rage and conflict exist because someone kept you from something you wanted
What exists in our heart that has nothing to do with the other person? Idolatry and a lack of trust in God
Key word: Covet
James 4:2
You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. NIV
Covet: We desire something so intensely that we convince ourselves that we can’t be happy, content or satisfied without it.
Idolatry: We require something other than God and His will to be happy, content and satisfied. Anything that replaces God in our life.
What do I want bad enough that I am willing to yell at, tune out, disengage with, abuse or neglect another person in order to get it?
James 4:2
You do not have because you do not ask God. NIV
Has it ever occurred to you that you’re not getting what you crave because you are trying to squeeze it out of someone who doesn’t have it to give?
What do I want bad enough that I am willing to yell at, tune out, disengage with, abuse or neglect another person in order to get it?
James 4:3
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. NIV
James 4:4
You adulterous people. NIV
Spiritual adultery: When we look to something or someone else for what can only be found in God.
HUMBLE YOUSELF
James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. NIV
Humble yourself: Acknowledging God has a good reason withholding something you desire.
Psalm 84:11
The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right (walk is blameless). NLT
Isaiah 55:9
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. NLT
James 4:7
Submit yourselves, then, to God. NIV
Humble yourself: Admitting the idolatry in our heart is a significant contributor to our conflict.
James 4:8-9
Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. NIV
“I’m the problem. It’s me.”
Don’t focus on being vindicated or loosing leverage.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. NIV
Admit our wrongdoing and trust God with the rest.
When a person admits their part in a conflict, it often opens up the other person to admit their part.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. NIV
James 4:6
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” NIV
James 4:8
Come near to God and he will come near to you. NIV
