Old School - The Story of Samuel
Some things stand the test of time. Some things that are vintage dramatically increase in value. Join us as we glance back into the Old Testament for some ancient stories that hold some timeless truth, principles, and practical insights for us in our apprenticeship after Jesus and God's best for us. We're looking into a few characters from the Old Testament to discover that these aren't just stories from long ago -- they hold ancient truths for us in our spiritual journey today. May you find your faith spurred on by their story.

Listening is a challenge in a land of so much noise...
There is a character that's admired in the Old Testament that we see over many decades - demonstrating the ability to hear from the Lord and lead God’s people in his truth — the pleasant truth and the challenging truth. SAMUEL

The two Books of Samuel cover the history of Israel from the last quarter of the 12th century b.c. to the first quarter of the 10th. They explain Israel’s transition from loosely associated tribes led by local judges to a unified nation led by kings.
’“Speak, for Your servant is listening.’”
*may this be the posture of your heart forever and always
REMINDERS:
-we are God’s servant- he is not ours
-we’re to stay attentive to what He has to say, not just quickly rushing to tell him our opinions and thoughts without listening in return.
-we are to remain open to His Voice above all others - we live in a land of many, many voices and it matters what frequency you tune into… we are all shaped by voices; but we do get to decide which voice we will attune to hear and which we will tune out…

Jesus says about his people: (John 10) "When he"—the Good Shepherd—"has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice."
To have a personal relationship with God means I must remain open to the possibility that the Spirit of God is continually speaking, prompting, guiding. That He is communicating with me and I want to tune into it – I want to have EARS TO HEAR…
Audiologically, there is a short time delay between sound waves hitting our outer ear and reaching our inner ear. So, many things we listen to once, and others…we actually end up listening twice.
**Jesus had a popular phrase he often used when he was teaching:
‘Whoever has ears, let them hear’
(Jesus said this 6 times in gospels and 8 times in the book of Revelation)
When Jesus said, “whoever has ears, let him hear.” It was an exhortation to truly hear from God – in essence a call for us too listen twice.

We live in a land with lots of competitive voices and we’re surrounded and submerged in so much noise. Lots of things hit our outer ear — but we’re wanting God’s voice & nudges to go into our inner ears (into our hearts)
We hear lots of voices, — but to truly hear is to listen AND to take it in and have it change you, shape you, mold you, motivate you, move you, and transform you…

How does God whisper best? In lots of ways… He’s multi-faceted…

The Lord’s voice is clear to those that remain near
Samuel models a life that stays close and dialed into God over decades…attentiveness and closeness to God marked his life…
-reminder tonight:Choose to stay close to God
*we will all feel and face the continual pull of distraction and diversion in this world…
**adopt the prayer posture: "Speak Lord, your servant is listening" - give me ears to hear...
