Intro:
A. We’re talking about weights that weigh us down
B. We’ve talked about doubt and fear
C. The weight of fear is a huge negative in our lives
D. Proverbs says, “You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.
E. The security of the Word gives us strength to trust, to sleep, to overcome anxiety, to focus on the promise not the problem
F. Removing this weight will take full confidence in the Word of God
G. Isaiah 41:13 (MSG) says – I, your God, have a firm grip on you and I’m not letting go. I’m telling you, ‘Don’t panic. I’m right here to help you.’
1. The weight of unforgiveness
A. Forgiveness can be a very difficult process, If you’re struggling, please feel free to come in and visit
B. Matthew 5:43-48 – “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.
C. Jesus, who is our model, loved and died for everyone. Not just good people. He treats everyone with compassion
D. Loving all people, is only possible through the intervening of Jesus in our lives, through the work of the Holy Spirit
E. This requires will and action, it’s not natural
F. To bless & pray for those who wrong us, is a sign of forgiveness
G. If we are God’s children, then we will have His character
H. We cannot possibly walk with God in true fellowship if we refuse to forgive others.
I. If we have truly experienced God’s forgiveness why would we refuse to grant forgiveness to others.
J. Forgiveness isn’t saying what happened is ok, it’s turning it over to God and being released from the hold it’s placed on our life
2. Matthew
A. Matthew 6:14-15 – “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
B. This is not the prayer of a lost person’s initial prayer for salvation - not the creation of a relationship, but the restoration of it.
C. The goal is the renewal of the joy & power of right relationship
D. Mattew 6:14-15 (MSG) – “In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.
E. The Bible teaches that we can’t be right with God and have a wrong attitude toward others
F. Some who have unforgiveness against others have not truly experienced God’s forgiveness.
G. How can I expect God to mercifully do for me what I callously refuse to do for others?
H. As a believer, we don’t want to hold onto something that corrupts our relationship with God
I. We know that salvation is by grace, not works, but also that our continued relationship with God is something we have a part in.
J. Are you holding onto grudges, hatred, unforgiveness today?
