What is HUBRIS?
Hubris is when someone thinks they’re better or more important than they are.
What is HUMILITY?
Humility is a grateful awareness that life and everything in it belong to God.
Conflict #1: The Midianites (7:1-22)
"The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times."
Psalm 12:6
"Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction."
Isaiah 48:10
Gideon’s Test: 32,000 --> 10,000 --> 300 against 135,000
God contends with no one for His glory.
Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Conflict #2: The Ephraimites (7:23-8:3)
God turns hubris people over to the destruction of their pride.
"He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed."
Proverbs 3:34 (NIV)
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:6
Conflict #3: The Succothites and The Kings of Midian (8:5-21)
God doesn’t honor personal vendettas; he’ll zap your energy and confuse your path.
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
Leviticus 19:18
Conflict #4: God Himself (8:23-32)
Are you fighting for God, or are you fighting to be god? Are you fighting for God’s glory or your own?
God allows failure when we fight to claim His rightful place.
TAKE NO CREDIT; KEEP NO GLORY.
