What is godliness and how do we grow in it?
Godliness is our devotion to be like God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Thus, in Christian usage it means piety, reverence, a state of soul in which the individual seeks to conform to the mind of God in all things, by the power of the Holy Spirit within.” Beacon Bible Commentary (Page 324)
Holiness is what we are trying to conform to; Godliness is our devotion to be like God.
1. Godliness requires God’s power.
2. Godliness requires knowledge of what is godly.
“A Christian's knowledge should effect the way they live.” - Wayne Mueller
How do we increase our knowledge?
1. Reading and Studying God’s Word
2. Meditate (Focusing on Scripture Throughout the Day)
3. Hearing God’s Word
4. Small groups

3. Godliness requires our purposeful effort.
2 Peter 1:5 - “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue.”
1 Timothy 4:7 - “Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness”
1 Timothy 6:11-12 - But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
Titus 2:11-12 - For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

Godliness is not just what we abstain from but what we participate in.
Is godliness one of the things you are willing to put purposeful effort towards?
