3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

What did Jesus do?
1. Withdrew from the crowd.
• 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw,
PRACTICAL ADVICE:
Be intentional about where and when you pray.
Our prayer life is too holy to be treated as common.
2. Knelt down- took a posture of humility.
• and knelt down and prayed.
3. He was authentic, real with His Father.
• 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me.
4. Sought the Father’s will, not His own.
• Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Luke 11:5-13 ESV
5And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence (PERSISTENCE) he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Romans 8:15-17 ESV
15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Hebrews 4:16 AMP
16Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

Lies of the Orphan Spirit-
• Your prayers aren’t “spiritual” enough.
• You’re bothering God.
• God is annoyed with you.
• You have no right to ask Jesus for “that!”
• If He didn’t answer you the first time, the answer is no!
• You’re praying about insignificant things.
o Philippians 4:6 NLT
o Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God
what you need and thank him for all he has done.

CAUTION:
The orphan spirit will make you give up, stop asking, and stop believing;
and convince you that it’s honoring God.

Luke 18:1-8 ESV
1And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” 6And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

5. He didn’t give up!

• 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat
became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Strengthen- enisxýō – in-E-skhoo'-o
engaging, assaulting strength – properly, being strong enough to
face necessary confrontation (engage resistance).

We are in a spiritual battle!
You’re being strengthened and fortified, not to sit the
battle out, but to ENGAGE the resistance!

Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Luke 22:44-48 ESV
44And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

James 5:16-18 ESV
16Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. (Effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man, availeth much) 17Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

Fervent - agonizomai – “to strive or struggle" (agonize)
The place of agony is an invitation to effectual prayer that avails much!

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 ESV
9But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
