Matthew 16:13-20
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the
Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the
prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by
my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the
gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you
bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then
he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock
Words and music by Ann Omley
The wise man built his house upon the Rock,
The wise man built his house upon the Rock,
The wise man built his house upon the Rock,
And the rains came tumbling down.
The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up,
But the house on the Rock stood firm.
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
And the rains came tumbling down.
The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up,
And the house on the sand [fell flat] went splat!
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
1 Peter 2:4-10
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to
him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house [a] to be a holy priesthood, offering
spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.” [b]
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,” [c]
8 and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.” [d]
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that
you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once
you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now
you have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:4
As you come to him, the living Stone
2 Samuel 22:2-3
2 “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield [a] and the horn [b] of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.
Psalm 18:2-3
2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield [a] and the horn [b] of my salvation,
my stronghold.
3 I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
Joshua 24:14-15
14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers
worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems
undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your
forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for
me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
