Last week we started our new series called Breaking the Law. We discussed the topic of sin and why we need Jesus. This week we are going to focus on the question "Why is sin a big deal?".
Ice Breaker: Why do you think that we minimize our own sins more than we do the sins of others?
The Cross is our proof that sin is a big deal! Pastor Jonathan gave a brief overview of the Bible and pointed out that when it comes to sin, Jesus changed it (i.e. Old Testament vs New Testament, Law of Moses vs the way of Jesus (grace and truth)). Where do you see evidence of this in the following scriptures?
When it comes to sin, the who is more important than the what. Read the following 3 verses. In what ways do you see Jesus prioritizing the who over the what?
Simply put, God hates sin because sin hurts people, and God loves people. We often ask the question "Is this a sin", but Pastor Jonathan gave us a new way to think about this. What we should be asking is "Does this somehow hurt others or me?" Why do you think this question is more honoring to our Heavenly Father?

Unfortunately, we are not always the best judge when it comes to sin in our own lives. Sometimes we have to seek wise counsel to help us see things clearly. Who is a trusted person in your life when you need perspective?
