DEATH ON A CROSS (VERSE 5-11)
SCRIPTURE
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11, ESV
OUR SIN
1/ Adam’s sin infected and affected all people for all time.
…by the trespass of the one man (Adam), (physical and spiritual) death reigned through that one man.” Romans 5:17, NIV
Christ’s sacrificial death covers universal and personal sin.
We have all rejected God, reformed good to evil, refused to do what is right, and resolved to do what is wrong.
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23
2/ Sin deals death to our spirit.
3/ Sin damns our soul to hell.
According to Pew Research, only 38% of Millennials believe in the doctrine of hell.
4/ Sin destroys our relationship with God.
5/ Sin disrupts our relationship with others.
6/ Sin deteriorates our world.
Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. Romans 8:20
7/ Sin distorts the image of God within us.
8/ Sin defiles our individual righteousness.
GOD’S RESPONSE
1/ Jesus died to redeem us.
Because sin demands a price for our souls, Christ bought us with His own blood.
God bought you with a high price. 1 Corinthians 6:20
God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8
2/ Jesus died to justify us.
Because sin removes our righteousness, Christ offers us His righteousness.
…righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Rom 3:22, NIV
3/ Jesus died to save us.
Because sin damns our souls, Christ saves us from the eternal consequences of sin.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. John 3:36, NIV
4/ Jesus died to sanctify us.
Because sin distorts the image of God in us, the Holy Spirit continuously forms us into the image of Christ.
5/ Jesus died to regenerate us.
Because sin dealt death to our spirit, Christ brings us back to life.
6/ Jesus died to reconcile us to the Father.
Because sin destroyed our relationship with the Father, Christ brings us back into right relationship with Him and others.
MAKING A STATEMENT
1/ Jesus died on a cross to reveal the depth of our depravity.
“Crucifixion…was supposed to be seen by as many people as possible. Debasement resulting from public agony was a chief feature of the method, along with the prolonging of agony. It was a form of advertisement, or public announcement—this person is the scum of the earth, not fit to live, more like an insect than a human being. The crucified wretch was pinned up like a specimen. Crosses were not placed out in the open for convenience or sanitation, but for maximum public exposure.” F. Rutledge
2/ Jesus died on a cross to reveal the depth of God’s love.
CLOSE
And He makes it so very simple.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13
But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Through death on a cross, Jesus has provided new life here and to come!
SCRIPTURES RELATED TO SALVATION
He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for Him. Hebrews 9:26-28
He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. 1 Peter 2:24, NLT
With His own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—He entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. Hebrews 9:12
“(Jesus) will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Jesus in Luke 19:10
This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Paul in 1 Timothy 1:15
“And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” John 3:36
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
