1. Helping people be free.
“The reasons for providing haven for the escaped slave is that Israel, as an escaped slave people, had found refuge in Yahweh.” (Cornerstone Biblical Commentary-Lev.-Deut, Comfort, 609)
2. Israeli children shall not be prostitutes.
3. Be interested in non-interest loans.
"…We always help our people” (The Preacher’s Commentary, Deut., Maxwell, 251)
4. Making vows requires carefulness.
“1. Consider your ability to pay before your promise. 2. Pay your vows to God. 3. Keep even rash promises or obtain honorable release. Learn then to make vows with due consideration.” (Beacon Bible Commentary, Gen-Deut., Ford, Deasley, 580)
Psalm 15:4 “who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the LORD; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind;” (NIV)
5. Sharing food is good.
Sermon Discussion Questions
1. Is there someone in bondage around you that you can help set free? (could be emotional, spiritual, or physical). Can you assist them to let them dwell with you?
2. How can the church help set people free from prostitution?
3. How many loans do you have? How much do you pay on the interest each year? How can you encourage the younger generation not to be held captive by loans? Do you need to write off a loan that someone has to you?
4. Name as many vows as possible that you can think of. What was the most important vow you ever made? How have you felt you have done in keeping that vow? Why do we need to be careful of the vows we make?
5. How could this instruction about eating from someone's vineyard get abused? Are you hospitable, and do you share your food? How can you share with someone this week?
6. Of the several ways of Caring for others, what has God spoken to you about most specifically?
