Pre-or-Post Message Questions For Reflection:
1. Mark 11: 1 - 11 says, As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts.
The beginning of Holy week, Palm Sunday, has Mark painting a picture how the crowd responded to Jesus’ coming into the city, riding on a colt. At this point, what was the crowd’s ideas and expectations of this coming king into the city? What were they hoping he was going to do? What does the word ‘hosanna’ mean?
2. How were God’s plans and ideas different from the crowd’s? In other words, what was God’s intended purpose for this coming king? Ie. What was the grand entrance of Jesus all leading to? And why?
3. Have you, like the crowd, ever had ideas or beliefs about God that required re-adjusting? Think of some things in your journey of faith where this may have been the case. What would you point to that led you to having a new enlightened perspective?
4. The term ‘deconstruct’ or ‘deconstruction’ is a bit of a trending word in some Christian circles these days. Do you know someone who has said they are ‘deconstructing their faith’? What do you think they mean by it? How could you come alongside them and be a guide, pointing them to markers that hopefully could be helpful? How might they earn your trust? (note: deconstruction without reconstruction is a tragedy; who do they continually need to be pointed towards? yes, the Sunday school answer is spot on!)
5. Luke 19: 41 - 44 says, As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace … because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
Why was Jesus weeping when he saw the city of Jerusalem? What is the ‘takeaway’ for you in reflecting on the passages above?
